Re: Off-road Spots
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi I have a Mazda 4x4 and I have been looking all around the Mission
Viejo/Santa Margarita/ Laguna Hills area for places to go off roading. I
can't find anywhere. Does anyone have any idea as to where I should go
to go offroading. I know that there's Holy Jim's canyon around here but
that's too crowded. I need to have it sort of close to home, not more
than a half hour away because otherwise my parents will find out. If you
have any good places please E-mail me. Thanks.

There are _lots_ of off-roading spots fairly close to your area, but
not many within a 30-minute drive. I've been up Holy Jim canyon a
number of times and have never run into enough people to consider it
"crowded". (I think I ran into more people doing Coyote Canyon.)
Holy Jim is a nice "Sunday drive" kind of ride, but certainly not very
challenging.
If they ever open it again, you might try the Saddleback Mountain
route. Take Santiago Canyon Road to Silverado Canyon Road. Go up
Silverado Canyon to the very end. If the gate's open, you're in luck.
If not, you've had a pleasant drive and it's time to go home. The
last time I was up there was two years ago after some heavy spring
rains and the roads were _very_ challenging, though that's not
normally the case. It's a pleasant ride and tough enough that you
won't see too many Oldsmobiles near the top. Oh yeah, if it's a
clear day, there are some great views up by the transmitting towers.
When you get to the top you can head back down the way you came, go
east on Indian Truck Trail (dumps onto the 15), or head south on 3S04
(dumps onto Ortega Highway). If you take the southern route, you can
cross Ortega Highway and continue on toward the Wildomar ORV area.
Unfortunately, I think a lot of this area got hit by the fires so the
roads may be closed and the scenery is going to be less than
attractive.
A bit outside your 30-minute radius, the Arrowhead/Big Bear area has
dozens of trails ranging from "pack up Grandma and the kids, let's go
for a ride" to "break out the winches, this is gonna get ugly."
For a complete guide to lots of SoCal off-roading, I recommend Harry
Lewellyn's "Glovebox Guide to Unpaved Southern California". You might
also want to look for Rick Russell's trail maps. Most of the local
4x4 stores should have them.
